The idea of females smoking used to be more socially acceptable than it is today. In the 1950s through the 1970s many ladies started smoking because it was socially expected of them. Overall the entire population smoked much more in earlier decades than they do now. We have learned much more about the harmful and deadly effects of smoking on people and now it is socially unacceptable for females to become smokers. Smoking is enough to make a woman a social pariah, but many women are social smokers and only smoke when they are in a bar or tavern having a drink with friends. Some women smoke because they are afraid that they will gain weight if they quit smoking. Many women won’t smoke around their significant other.
Women And Smoking In The Past Smoking in earlier decades was considered to be a liberating act for females. As early as the 1920’s females started smoking cigars and cigarettes as a way to rebel against the strict social roles assigned to women. Ladies smoking eventually became a normal thing. Women were inspired by early movies to start smoking because the silver screen sirens they idolized were lady cigar and cigarette smokers . Smoking ladies because a normal sight in polite society and it was not unusual to see a lady smoking. Ladies smoking cigars was seen as an intriguing thing rather than something that would be socially looked down on. Smoking was not just for the young either, it would not be uncommon to see an old lady smoking. A smoking lady was considered to be attractive. In the 1990’s it was considered edgy for a female to be a cigar smoker but that changed and many women have stopped smoking cigars. Things Have Changed Smoking is no longer socially acceptable for females. In fact, smoking isn’t socially acceptable for anyone anymore. Now that doctors have discovered more about the terrible effects of smoking on human health smoking is being banned in many places and all people are encouraged not to smoke. There is a long list of reasons why females shouldn’t smoke. Smoking can cause major damage to a womans reproductive system. In extreme cases smoking can even lead to infertility. Female smokers, like other smokers, face more and more pressure everyday to quit smoking. Not just to protect their own health but also to protect the rest of the public from the dangers of secondhand smoke. Women who smoke should never smoke around their kids.
