What Is Salvia?
Salvia is plant that comes from Mexico. There are pictures of shamans smoking salvia in many places in Mexico. Shamans used to smoke, chew or in other ways ingest the leaves to produce a trance like state, kind of like the peyote that Native American shamans used. Smoking salvia has been a source of great controversy in the US because in most states Salvia is legal and there are no legal restrictions on its use. That means in most states you are allowed to smoke or chew salvia leaves which may produce a hallucinogenic trance like state. Because most states have not outlawed smoking salvia there is a lot of interest in salvia. Depictions of salvia are usually pictures of Mexican shamans smoking salvia to achieve an altered state of consciousness. Salvia doesn’t seem to have many side effects. There have been few reports of problems or symptoms associated with smoking salvia. People smoking salvia usually report a lingering anti-depressant effect that may last for up to 24 hours. Salvia smoke is pungent, but not unpleasant. It has a minty smell. What Do I Do With Salvia? There are websites that can show you how to smoke salvia leaves and teach you the best way to smoke salvia. The effects of smoking salvia are mild because salvia leaves that are sold commercially are not extremely potent. Most users report a calm, meditative physical state. Salvia smoking can cause a loss of motor control though so people who are going to smoke salvia leaves or chew them should always have someone around who is not going to smoke salvia or chew it just in case something goes wrong. There some Internet based smoke shops that carry salvia leaves and can instruct you on how to smoke them but check their regulations carefully. While salvia is legal in most states, it’s not legal in all states. If you buy salvia leaves on the Internet but you live in a state where salvia is illegal they will not deliver salvia to you. Be Careful Just because most states haven’t outlawed salvia doesn’t mean there is no risk. More and more states are debating whether or not to outlaw salvia everyday. Salvia and its effects are not well known and have not been extensively studied so you should not run out and smoke saliva just because it’s legal. It may still have serious side effects that are just not known yet.
